New Patient General FAQ - Televero Health
Is this the right time? Is it even for me?
Taking the first step toward mental health support can bring up a dozen questions and a quiet, persistent hum of uncertainty.
You might wonder if your feelings are "serious enough," or you may worry about the time, the cost, or what it means to open up to someone new. Those questions make perfect sense. They are the signs of a thoughtful person on the edge of making a meaningful choice.
What's on your mind today? Let us guide you.

1. Feeling Nervous About Reaching Out?
What if I'm nervous, scared, or not ready to start therapy yet?
It's completely normal to feel nervous. In fact, almost everyone feels this way before their first session. That feeling is a sign that you're considering something meaningful. Your nervousness might come from not knowing what to expect, worry about talking about hard topics, or fear of being judged. Please know that reaching out for information is a positive first step that doesn't commit you to anything.
I'm worried people will think I'm 'crazy' or 'weak' if I go to therapy. Is that true?
That fear is incredibly common, and it often comes from a place of deep personal integrity. You've likely spent your life being strong, reliable, and capable. The idea of asking for help can feel like you're failing at the very role you've worked so hard to maintain. We see it differently. At Televero Health, we believe that choosing therapy isn't an admission of weakness; it's the ultimate act of taking responsibility for your wellbeing.
Are my problems 'serious enough' to need therapy?
That's one of the most common questions we hear. You don't need to be in a major crisis to benefit from therapy. It’s for that feeling of dread that settles in on Sunday nights, or the exhaustion of replaying a single awkward conversation in your head. If you're wondering whether therapy could help, that feeling itself is enough.
I feel like others have it worse. Do I really deserve therapy?
Yes. Your pain is valid, even if someone else is going through something different. This feeling often comes from a place of compassion for others, and we honor that. AND, you don't need to "earn" support by reaching a certain threshold of distress. Therapy isn't about comparing suffering—it's about giving yourself the same care you would so readily offer to others.
I've tried therapy before and it didn't help. Why would this be different?
It makes perfect sense that you're skeptical. Investing your hope, time, and energy into something that didn't work is discouraging. The most common reason therapy doesn't work is not a good fit between the patient and the provider or approach. We're different in several key ways:
- Our intake process is designed to match you with a specialist for your specific needs.
- Our MD CARE™ model means a doctor is involved in your care, providing expert oversight.
- If one provider isn't the right fit, we make it easy and comfortable to switch to another within our team.
We encourage you to share what didn't work before so we can find a better path forward together.
I'm already so busy. How can I possibly fit therapy into my schedule?
We see therapy not as another hour taken from your week, but as an investment that gives you hours back. The 45 minutes you spend with us is often reclaimed in the form of less time spent paralyzed by anxiety, more focus to get work done efficiently, and more present, connected energy to give to your family in the evenings. It's not about losing time; it's about reclaiming your life.
I'm overwhelmed and don't have time to focus on therapy. Should I wait?
It's a paradox we see every day: the moment you feel you have the least amount of time for therapy is often the moment it can give you the most time back. Therapy isn't another chore on your to-do list; it's a dedicated space that helps you manage the list more effectively. It's designed to reduce your feeling of overwhelm, not add to it.
I've been putting off therapy for a long time—how do I finally take the step?
Taking that first step can feel like the hardest part. The key is to make it small and concrete. Don't think about your entire therapy process; just think about the single action of sending an email or making a call. That one step is all it takes to set things in motion. We'll help you with the rest. You can start by calling us at (512) 956-5003 for a no-pressure chat or by submitting a Patient Assistance Request.
What if therapy doesn't work for me? I've felt this way for a long time.
Feeling stuck can make it hard to believe change is possible—we hear that, and it makes sense. But change is possible, especially with the right support. Many people who've struggled for years begin to feel better after just a few sessions. You don't have to believe in therapy 100% to give it a chance—just enough hope to start the conversation.
I'm not comfortable opening up or talking about my feelings. Can therapy still help?
Yes. A good therapist will never force you to share anything. You set the pace. Some people talk right away, while others take time—and that's perfectly okay. Therapy can also focus on building practical skills, problem-solving, or understanding patterns without deep emotional disclosure until you are ready. You just have to be willing to show up; we'll meet you there.
I don't like sharing personal stuff. What if I'm not ready to talk about everything?
You don't have to. Therapy is your space, and you are always in control of what you share and when. There's no pressure to talk about anything before you're ready. Some people spend early sessions just getting comfortable or focusing on present-day stress rather than past events. That's a perfectly valid way to begin.
I tend to start things and not finish them. What if I can't stick with therapy?
Staying consistent can be tough—especially when you're already feeling low. But therapy is built to support your motivation, not rely on it. Even if you miss a session or take a break, you can always return. We'll help you create a schedule that's realistic and flexible. Starting—even imperfectly—is a powerful step.
Will I become dependent on therapy to function?
That's an important and insightful question. The answer is no; in fact, the goal of good therapy is the exact opposite. Therapy is designed to help you become more independent, not less. It's about giving you tools and insights so that over time, you feel more confident navigating life's challenges on your own. Most people don't stay in therapy forever. They come when they need it, learn what helps, and return only if life brings new challenges later.
I don't know exactly what I want to get out of therapy. Can I still start?
Absolutely. You don't need to have it all figured out. In fact, "I'm not sure what I want, I just know something needs to change" is a perfect reason to start. Figuring it out together is a great first goal. Clarity often comes after taking the first step, not before.
2. Our Medical Practice & Care Model
Is Televero Health a licensed medical practice?
Yes. This is a crucial distinction. We are a fully licensed behavioral health medical practice, not a technology company, mental health app, or coaching platform. This means your care is delivered by licensed medical professionals following the same clinical and privacy standards as a high-quality in-person clinic.
Is Televero Health a therapy app?
No. We are a medical practice that provides care through private, secure video sessions, not a therapy app. This means your experience is centered on real human connection with highly qualified professionals—not text messaging or chatbots. Your treatment is designed, delivered, and overseen by a collaborative clinical team led by an on-staff medical doctor.
Is Televero Health a matching service?
No, we are not a matching service. A matching service uses an algorithm to assign you to a provider in their network. At Televero Health, our own in-house clinical leadership team thoughtfully reviews your needs and pairs you with the right provider from our dedicated staff. It's a clinical decision, not a tech algorithm.
Is Televero Health an online platform like BetterHelp or Talkiatry?
That is an important question. Televero Health is different by design. We are not a tech platform that simply connects you with a provider; we are a comprehensive, licensed medical practice where you are cared for by a dedicated clinical team. Your care is always guided by a licensed psychiatrist (MD) who oversees your entire plan, ensuring a level of safety and coordination you would expect from a high-quality in-person clinic.
How is Televero Health different from therapy apps or matching services?
The core difference is our identity as a true medical practice. This means three things for you: 1) Clinical Oversight: Your care is supervised by an on-staff medical doctor, ensuring safety and quality. 2) Team-Based Care: Our providers collaborate behind the scenes to support you. 3) Human-Centered Pairing: You are thoughtfully paired with a provider by our clinical team, not an algorithm. We provide care, not just connections.
How will you match me with the right therapist or provider?
This is a thoughtful, human process, not an algorithm. Our in-house clinical team, led by our medical doctors, reviews your needs, preferences, and goals. They thoughtfully pair you with the provider from our dedicated staff—one of our hundreds of in-house professionals—who is best suited to support you. This clinical pairing leads to a much stronger therapeutic fit from your very first session.
What is MD-led, team-based care?
This is our way of ensuring you receive the safest, most supportive care possible. It means your treatment is always guided by a licensed psychiatrist (an on-staff medical doctor specializing in mental health), who leads a dedicated team working together just for you. For you, this means seamless support if your needs change, you don't have to constantly retell your story, and you can build a trusted relationship with a care team that truly knows you. You can meet our clinical leadership team here.
Who will be providing my care?
Your care is supported by our MD CARE™ team — a coordinated group of our own in-house providers, led by our on-staff medical doctors. This team includes licensed therapists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and physicians who all work together behind the scenes. While you may meet with one primary provider, you have a full clinical team ensuring your care is comprehensive and connected.
What are the credentials of your providers?
Our clinical team is held to the highest standards. Our physicians are board-certified psychiatrists (MDs), our nurse practitioners hold advanced degrees with psychiatric specializations, and our therapists hold master's or doctoral degrees and are fully licensed in their respective states (LPC, LCSW, etc.). All providers undergo a rigorous vetting process and receive ongoing training.
Do doctors really refer their patients to Televero Health?
Yes. We are honored to be a trusted partner for more than 3,000 physicians across the country. They choose Televero Health because they know their patients will receive expert medication management from psychiatric specialists and faster access to therapy than is often possible locally. Most importantly, they know our team will coordinate with them to ensure every patient feels supported and understood.
What types of therapy approaches do you offer?
Our providers are trained in a wide range of evidence-based approaches. While you don't need to know these clinical terms, they include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness-based techniques. The most important thing is that your therapist will tailor their approach to what works best for you and your specific goals.
3. Getting Started: Your First Steps
I'm overwhelmed. What's the simplest way to get started?
We understand completely. Forget everything else for a moment and just focus on this: Call us at (512) 956-5003 or submit a Patient Assistance Request. A friendly, calm person will help you. You don't need to know what you want or have anything ready. You just have to reach out. We'll take it from there.
How does the process start?
It begins with a simple first step: reaching out. You can call our office or fill out our Start My Care form. From there, our care team will guide you through scheduling an initial one-on-one evaluation with a licensed provider to understand your story and create the best care plan for you.
Why is an initial evaluation required?
Because your story is unique, and we want to ensure you receive the right kind of care from the very beginning. An initial evaluation is a collaborative conversation that helps us understand your current symptoms and goals, confirm any diagnosis, and create a personalized care plan that is safe and effective for you. All new patients complete an evaluation to establish care.
Do you have availability for new patients?
Yes. We are always accepting new patients and typically offer same-day or next-day appointments. To get started and see our earliest availability, we invite you to complete the Start My Care form.
I was in therapy in the past (with a different practice) and want to start back up again. How does that work?
We welcome patients with all levels of previous therapy experience. Since you would be a new patient to our practice, you will go through our simple intake process, including an initial evaluation. However, our providers are experts at building upon the insights and progress you've made in your previous therapy. You won't have to start from zero.
I'm currently seeing another therapist. How do I transition my care to Televero Health?
We understand that transitioning your care is a significant decision, and we're here to make it as smooth as possible. Our initial evaluation will build upon the work you've already done. With your written consent, we can also coordinate with your previous therapist to ensure continuity of care. Let us help you get started with our Start My Care form.
I was a patient before and took a break. How do I restart my care?
Welcome back! Restarting your care is simple. Since you're already in our system, just call us at (512) 956-5003 or submit a Patient Assistance Request to let us know you're ready to come back. You won't need to complete the full new patient registration again.
What do I need to complete the Start My Care form?
To complete the Start My Care form, which only takes about five minutes, having these items handy will help make the process smooth and quick for you:
- Your insurance card (for photos of the front and back)
- A government-issued ID (like a driver's license)
- A credit or debit card to place securely on file
Can I complete the Start My Care form on my phone?
Yes, absolutely. Our secure Start My Care form works easily on any phone, tablet, or computer. There is no need to print or scan anything.
What happens after I complete the Start My Care form?
Once you press submit on the Start My Care form, our dedicated care team begins working for you immediately. First, we verify your insurance benefits, then a care coordinator will reach out to you personally to review costs and help you schedule your first appointment.
How quickly can I be seen for an appointment?
We can often schedule your first session for the same or next day after your registration is complete. To get scheduled for our earliest appointments, the first step is the Start My Care form.
When will my appointment be scheduled?
Our care team typically reaches out within one business day after you submit the Start My Care form. We work quickly to get your first session scheduled as soon as you are ready.
What if I still have questions before starting?
It's perfectly okay to have more questions. You can call us at (512) 956-5003, submit a Patient Assistance Request, or get your answers by beginning the process with our Start My Care form, which will connect you with a care coordinator who can help.
4. Insurance & Payment
Does Televero Health accept insurance?
Yes. We are in-network with insurance plans covering over 75 million people nationwide. Our goal is to make care as affordable as possible. Before your first appointment, our team will personally verify your benefits and explain any out-of-pocket costs clearly, so there are never any surprise bills.
What insurance plans does Televero Health accept?
We accept most major commercial insurance plans, such as Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Humana. Our partnerships are always expanding. The best way to know for sure is to let our team verify your specific coverage when you register. You can also view our current list of accepted insurance partners here.
What if I'm not using insurance?
That is perfectly fine. We will guide you through our clear, affordable self-pay pricing options. You can also use funds from a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) if you have one. You will review and agree to all costs before your first appointment.
What should I expect to pay?
Transparency is our promise. Before your appointment, our team will explain all costs. If you’re using insurance, we’ll review your specific copay or deductible amounts. If you're using our self-pay option, we’ll confirm the session price. There are no hidden fees.
If I need medication, will I be able to afford it?
We are very conscious of medication costs. Our providers prioritize prescribing affordable generic medications whenever medically appropriate (over 95% of our prescriptions are generic). We will work with you to find a treatment option that is not only effective but also financially manageable.
Why do I need to put a credit card on file?
Placing a card on file is a standard practice that securely reserves your appointment with your provider. It also ensures a smooth and simple process for any future copays. For your peace of mind, your card will never be charged until you have reviewed and agreed to your specific benefits and costs with our care team.
Does insurance cover all types of services or just certain ones?
Coverage varies by plan, but most insurance plans cover both therapy (counseling) sessions and psychiatry (medication management) visits. Our team will verify the specifics for each type of service with your insurance provider so you know exactly what is covered before you begin.
What is an 'authorization' and will my insurance require one?
An authorization is a pre-approval from your insurance company that is sometimes required for them to cover services. This is a common requirement, but you don't need to worry about it. If your plan requires an authorization, our dedicated team will manage the entire process on your behalf.
What if my insurance doesn’t cover services?
If we find that we are not in-network with your plan, or if your plan does not cover our services, we will inform you immediately. You can cancel your appointment request at no cost. You will never be billed for anything until all costs have been reviewed and agreed upon by you.
What happens if my insurance changes while I'm in treatment?
Please let us know as soon as you can. Our team will work with you to make the transition as smooth as possible, verifying your new benefits and minimizing any disruption to your care.
5. Your Treatment: What to Expect
What exactly happens in my first therapy session?
Think of the first session less as an interrogation and more as the beginning of a conversation. The main goal is for you and your provider to get to know each other and see if it's a good fit. You'll start with introductions, and your provider will ask some gentle questions to understand what's bringing you to therapy now. You will never be forced to share anything you're not ready to discuss. You are in control.
Do I need to prepare anything before my first session?
No formal preparation is required—just showing up is enough! If it feels helpful, you might jot down a few thoughts on what you'd like to talk about, but it's not necessary. The only thing to do beforehand is complete the intake forms we send you online, which helps your provider get to know you a bit before you meet.
What is expected of me in therapy? Do I have 'homework'?
The only thing truly expected of you is a willingness to show up and be as honest as you can be in that moment. You don't have to be perfect or prepared. Some therapists may occasionally suggest things to think about or practice between sessions—less like 'homework' and more like an invitation to see how therapy connects to your real life. This is always a collaborative process, and you are a partner in it, not a student being graded.
My Primary Care Physician (PCP) currently prescribes my medications. What are my options?
That is a very common situation, and we offer flexible options to support you. You are in control of how your care is managed. Your options include:
- Continuing with your PCP: You can absolutely continue receiving medications from your current doctor while engaging in therapy with our providers. We believe in collaborative care and can coordinate with your PCP with your permission.
- Transitioning to Our Care: If you prefer to have both your therapy and medication management in one place for streamlined care, you can transition your psychiatric care to one of our expert providers.
The choice is always yours, and we will support whatever works best for you and your doctor.
How will we measure progress?
Progress is a partnership. We track it in a few connected ways: by listening to your experience of how you feel day-to-day, by checking in on the real-world goals we set together, and by occasionally using standardized clinical questionnaires (like the PHQ-9 for depression) to get an objective snapshot. This combination ensures your treatment remains effective and focused on what matters to you.
How often will we review my treatment plan and goals?
Your treatment plan is a living document. We will formally review it together with you periodically, typically every 90 days, and informally much more often. You can ask to review or adjust your goals at any time. This is your care, and we want to ensure it is always aligned with your needs.
What if I already have a diagnosis from another clinician?
That's very helpful information. We will absolutely take your existing diagnosis into account as we get to know you. We still require an initial evaluation with one of our providers to ensure we have a complete and current understanding of your needs, which is essential for providing safe and effective care, especially if medication is involved. We see it as building on your previous care, not starting over from scratch.
Will I be forced to take medication? I'm worried about side effects.
No, you will never be forced to take medication. That is always your choice. If medication might be helpful, our providers will explain the potential benefits and risks, including side effects, so you can make an informed decision. Many of our patients improve with therapy alone. If you do try medication, we'll work closely with you to manage any side effects.
Will medication change who I am?
This is one of the most important and valid concerns people have. The goal of medication is never to change who you are; it's to clear away the static so that you can be more yourself. Think of it like cleaning a foggy window to see the view more clearly. Our expert psychiatric team works carefully to find the right medication at the lowest effective dose. Your identity is precious, and our goal is only to help you reclaim it.
What if therapy brings up painful feelings I'm not ready to face?
This is a very common and understandable fear. A good therapist is like a good guide on a difficult trail—they will never push you faster than you can safely go. You are always in control of the pace. Effective therapy actually begins by building safety and giving you tools to manage difficult emotions. You won't be thrown into the deep end. Your provider will help you build a sense of stability first, so that when you do choose to explore challenging topics, you feel supported and capable, not overwhelmed.
I'm afraid therapy will make me feel worse before I feel better. Is that true?
It can sometimes feel that way, especially if you're exploring painful feelings for the first time. But you won't be doing it alone. Therapy is designed to build safety and resilience before you dig into anything deep. You might feel some discomfort, but that's different from harm. It's like stretching a sore muscle—there can be tension, but it's a sign of growth, not danger. Your provider will help you manage this process carefully.
How long will I need to be in therapy?
The length of treatment varies widely depending on your specific needs and goals. Some people benefit from short-term therapy focused on a specific issue, while others find value in longer-term support for more complex challenges. You and your provider will discuss the expected duration of your care, and you are always in control of the decision to continue or end therapy.
6. Support For Your Specific Needs
What kind of care can I receive?
Your care at Televero Health is personalized to you. You are in control. We offer therapy and counseling, psychiatry for medication management, or a combined approach that integrates both. Whether you are already on medication, wish to avoid it, or are simply exploring your options, we will create a plan that aligns with your goals and comfort level.
Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Yes. Decades of research have confirmed that for most common conditions like anxiety and depression, online therapy is just as effective as traditional in-person therapy. Many patients find the convenience and comfort of being in their own space actually helps them engage more deeply. Our high standards of care ensure you receive the best treatment, regardless of the format.
Do you offer in-person therapy?
To provide the greatest possible access to care for our patients, Televero Health is a 100% online telehealth practice for all sessions. This model allows us to offer more flexible scheduling, including evenings and weekends, and eliminates travel time and other logistical barriers for you.
Can you help with anxiety and depression?
Absolutely. Anxiety and depression are two of the most common and treatable conditions we see. Whether it's the crushing weight of depression or the constant hum of anxiety, our team uses proven, evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) combined with medication management when needed. Our data shows an 80% reduction in depression symptoms and a 73% reduction in anxiety symptoms for our patients.
How does therapy help with grief and loss?
Grief is not something to be "cured," but therapy provides a vital, supportive space to process the complex emotions of loss. Our therapists can help you navigate this natural process in a healthy way, especially when your grief feels overwhelming or interferes with daily life. We help you make meaning of your loss and adjust to life's changes.
Can Televero Health help with relationship issues?
Yes. We provide effective therapy for a wide range of relationship concerns. In individual therapy, we can help you develop healthier communication patterns, set appropriate boundaries, and explore recurring dynamics in your relationships with partners, family, or friends.
Can therapy help with my physical symptoms like headaches or stomach problems?
Yes, in many cases it can. The mind and body are deeply connected, and many physical symptoms like chronic pain, digestive issues, and sleep problems are affected by stress and anxiety. While therapy is not a replacement for medical care from your physician, it can be a powerful tool to reduce the severity of these symptoms and improve your ability to manage them by addressing the underlying emotional factors.
How does assessment and treatment for ADHD work at Televero Health?
We have specialists in ADHD assessment and treatment for both children (age 5+) and adults. Our comprehensive evaluations go beyond simple checklists to understand how attention issues impact your daily life. We then offer personalized treatment that can include evidence-based behavioral strategies, skills development, and medication management when appropriate.
Can Televero Health help with my substance use?
Yes. We provide compassionate, non-judgmental treatment for substance use concerns. Our approach focuses on your personal goals, whether that is moderation, harm reduction, or abstinence. We help you address the underlying factors that may contribute to substance use, like anxiety or trauma, and develop skills to cope with cravings and high-risk situations.
7. Session Logistics & Privacy
Is online therapy really secure?
Absolutely. Your privacy is protected by law (HIPAA), and our video platform uses bank-level encryption. Many of our patients find telehealth offers even more privacy than in-person care—there is no waiting room or parking lot where you might run into a neighbor. It's just you and your provider in a secure, confidential space.
Who will find out that I'm seeing a therapist? Is it confidential?
Your therapy is completely confidential. We follow strict privacy laws (HIPAA) and will never share information about your care without your written permission, except in specific safety situations required by law (such as immediate risk of harm). If you use insurance, they receive only basic billing information, not the details of your sessions.
Will my employer find out I'm in therapy?
No. Your employer will not find out. This is protected by federal law. Even if you use your company's health insurance, your employer does not have access to your specific healthcare information. Your medical records are confidential.
How do I join my online appointment?
It's as simple as clicking a link. You’ll receive a secure Zoom session link by email and text. No downloads or passwords are required. You can join from any computer, tablet, or smartphone. If you prefer, you can download the free Zoom app beforehand to feel fully prepared.
Are there any location requirements for my telehealth sessions?
Yes, and this is an important point for ensuring safe and legal care. Due to state licensing laws, you must be physically located in the same state where your provider is licensed at the time of your appointment. For example, if you reside in Texas, your provider is licensed in Texas, and you must be in Texas for your session. If you are traveling out of state, we will need to reschedule your appointment for when you have returned.
Can I have a session from my car?
Yes, as long as your vehicle is safely **parked** for the entire duration of the session. We understand that a car can be a great private space. However, for your safety and the safety of others, sessions are never conducted while you are driving a vehicle. This is a strict policy. If a session begins while you are driving, your provider will end the call due to the risk of harm, and the appointment will be cancelled and rescheduled for a safer time.
What if I don't have reliable internet access?
We can accommodate different situations. If your video connection is unstable, you can switch to audio-only to reduce bandwidth. We also offer phone-based therapy sessions that require only a telephone connection, ensuring you can receive care regardless of your internet access.
What happens if my internet cuts out during a session?
Technical issues happen. If your connection drops, your provider will immediately try to call you on the phone number we have on file to continue the session or reschedule if necessary. You will not lose your session time due to a technical glitch.
Where can I find my completed form or documents?
All your documents are stored securely in your patient portal, which you can access at any time. Simply visit televerohealth.com/portal and log in.
8. For Family, Children & Caregivers
How do therapy sessions work for children? Do parents need to be present?
For younger children (typically ages 5-10), parents are usually present for at least part of each session to provide support and partnership. Our therapists use engaging, age-appropriate activities like games and drawing that work well virtually. For older children, we may have more one-on-one time, with parent check-ins at the beginning or end of the session. The level of involvement is always a collaboration between you, your child, and the therapist.
How do you engage young children in virtual therapy sessions?
Our child specialists are skilled at making virtual therapy interactive and fun. They use techniques like screen-sharing for therapeutic games, virtual whiteboards for drawing, and incorporating your child's own toys and interests into the session. We also use shorter session times (30-45 minutes) to match their attention spans.
My teenager refuses therapy. How can I encourage them to try it?
This is a common challenge. It's helpful to remember that for a teenager, control and respect are paramount. Forcing the issue often backfires. We suggest framing it as their choice. You can say, "I've found some people who are experts at helping with stress. I can't make you talk to them, but I'd like you to consider one session just to see what you think. Your privacy will be respected." The convenience of online therapy often appeals to teens and reduces resistance.
Will you share everything my teen discusses with me as their parent?
We balance respecting your teen's confidentiality with keeping you appropriately informed. The specific content of sessions remains private to build trust, but you will receive general updates on goals and progress. The only exceptions are situations involving risk of harm to your teen or others, which we are legally required to report to you. We establish these boundaries clearly with both you and your teen from the start.
How do I tell my family or partner that I'm starting therapy?
If you choose to tell them, it can be helpful to be simple and direct. You might say, "I've decided to talk with a therapist to work on my stress levels." Frame it as a proactive and positive choice for your health. You are in control of how much detail you share about your sessions, and it's perfectly okay to say, "I appreciate your support, but I'd prefer to keep my sessions private."
Can my partner or family member join some of my therapy sessions?
Yes, if you and your therapist agree it would be beneficial. Involving a loved one for one or more sessions can be very helpful for improving communication or helping them understand how to best support you. This is always your choice and would be discussed and planned with your therapist beforehand.
What if I’m registering for someone else?
We make it easy for parents, guardians, and caregivers to help a loved one get started. You can complete the registration using the patient’s information to create their secure portal. Once the portal is created, please call our office at (512) 956-5003 or submit a Patient Assistance Request, and we will gladly add you as an authorized contact.
9. Culturally Affirming & Inclusive Care
Will my therapist understand my cultural background and values?
This is a crucial question. Our team is diverse, and all our providers receive ongoing training in cultural competence. We encourage you to share important aspects of your cultural identity and values with your therapist. If you ever feel that your background isn't being understood, we will work with you to find a provider who is a better fit. Your care should honor every part of who you are.
My cultural or religious beliefs don't typically encourage therapy. How will you work with this?
We respect that many cultures and faiths have their own traditions for emotional well-being. Our approach can work alongside, not against, your beliefs. We have providers who can integrate faith-based perspectives if you wish. We see therapy as an additional tool for support, and we will always honor and respect your values in our work together.
What if my family or cultural community disapproves of me seeking therapy?
Navigating this can be challenging, and your therapist can help you with it. Remember that your decision to seek care is a personal and valid one, even if others don't understand. Our online sessions provide a high level of privacy, and you are in complete control of who you tell and what you share.
As an LGBTQ+ person, will I find affirming care?
Absolutely. We are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and affirming space for all LGBTQ+ individuals. Our providers receive specific training in LGBTQ+ healthcare needs. We see you, we honor your identity, and we are dedicated to providing care that is worthy of your trust.
I am nonbinary. Will my identity and pronouns be respected?
Yes, without question. Respecting your identity and pronouns is a fundamental and non-negotiable part of our practice. Our intake forms have dedicated spaces for you to share your pronouns and chosen name, and our providers are trained to create a safe and affirming environment where you will be addressed correctly and respectfully at all times.
10. The Therapeutic Relationship: A Partnership
What if I don't 'click' with my therapist right away? Is that normal?
Yes, that is completely normal. A therapeutic relationship is like any other relationship—it can take time to build trust and rapport. While an instant connection is wonderful, it's not required for therapy to be successful. We encourage you to give it a few sessions. However, if you feel it's truly not a good fit, we make it easy and comfortable to switch to another provider on our team.
What if I don't like my therapist or don't feel comfortable with them?
Your comfort is our priority. If you feel that your provider is not the right fit for any reason, you can absolutely request a change. This is a normal part of the process. Simply call us or submit a Patient Assistance Request, and we will facilitate the transfer with no awkwardness. You don't need a "good enough reason"—feeling that it's not the right match is reason enough.
How much should I share? Can I tell my therapist literally anything?
You can tell your therapist anything. Therapy is one of the few places in life where you have true freedom of speech without fear of judgment or reprisal. Your sessions are a confidential container built on safety and trust. That said, you are always in control. You never have to share more than you are comfortable with.
What if I disagree with my therapist or don't like one of their suggestions?
We want you to tell them! This is an incredibly important part of the therapeutic process. Good therapy is a partnership, not a dictatorship. Voicing a disagreement or concern is not disrespectful; it's an act of engagement that helps your therapist better understand you and adjust their approach. It strengthens the relationship and makes your therapy more effective.
Is it okay to ask my therapist questions about their methods or background?
Yes, absolutely. You have a right to be an informed and active participant in your own care. Asking questions about your therapist's approach, their experience with issues like yours, or why they are making a particular suggestion is encouraged. It helps you build trust and a stronger collaborative partnership.
11. Building a Vision for Your Future
I'm not in crisis, but I just feel 'stuck.' Can therapy help with that?
Yes. This feeling of being "stuck" is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy. You don't need to be in crisis to want more from your life. Therapy is an excellent tool for exploring what's keeping you stuck, identifying patterns that no longer serve you, and helping you get moving again in a direction that feels right for you.
Can therapy help me figure out my goals or find more meaning in my life?
Absolutely. Therapy is not just about reducing symptoms; it's also about building a life that feels more authentic and fulfilling. A therapist can act as a guide and a sounding board as you explore your values, clarify your goals, and connect with a deeper sense of purpose.
What does 'feeling better' actually look like in daily life?
"Feeling better" looks different for everyone, but it often shows up in small, meaningful ways. It might be the ability to handle a stressful work email without your heart racing. It might be having a difficult conversation with a loved one with more patience and less anger. Or it might simply be a quiet moment where you realize you're not dreading the day ahead. It's less about constant happiness and more about a steady, resilient sense of capability and peace.
How does therapy help me build resilience for future challenges?
Therapy doesn't just help you solve your current problems; it teaches you the skills to handle future ones. By understanding your patterns, learning new coping strategies, and developing a stronger sense of self, you build mental and emotional resilience. It's like building an emotional immune system, so that when life inevitably presents new challenges, you feel better equipped to face them with confidence.
12. After You Start Feeling Better
What happens if I start feeling better and then my symptoms come back?
This is a normal part of the healing process. Recovery is rarely a straight line. If symptoms return, you are not starting over from square one. You'll already have a relationship with your provider and a set of skills to draw upon. You can schedule a "booster" session or resume therapy for a short time to get back on track. This is an expected part of the healing process, not a failure.
How will I know when I'm ready to end therapy?
This is a decision you will make in partnership with your therapist. You'll likely know you're ready when you've met your initial goals, you feel confident in your ability to handle challenges using the skills you've learned, and you feel that therapy sessions are no longer as necessary as they once were. Ending therapy is a graduation, and the door is always open to return if you need support in the future.
